mother birds and dinosaurs
two egrets swooped
low flying shadow draped slow
slip dark dots slid over me
a sound, they barely made
they came to a stop near
the cattails
and began
back bent knee walking
as they do
to where their nest was
stick, twig, debris tuckery
between things unseen
the pond did have other inhabitants
though these seemed likely to serve
the royal court of the egret
as much as having any sense
of ownership
in this little society
frogs, turtles, snakes, salamanders
crawfish, red winged black birds, orioles
and a few other quick darting seed birds
all of which
while feathered
and beaked
and keen flyers
were not as majestic
as mother egret
and her way of walking
when nearing her nest
a hush and quiet
seemed to arise
the frogs especially
looked as if they were bowing
one eye on mother
wondering if she had already fed
