makeup, hair and accoutrements

she wore her hair up

in a knot atop her head

she said I have

so many earrings

I like to wear

I cannot decide which ones

I feel obligated

to show them all  

she certainly wasn’t going

to cut her hair when I suggested

it might be an easier way

to spend more reverent time

with her pantheon

of curl hooked metal and gems

every shape of geometry

and mimicry kept inside

a bureau the size of a small kitchen

the adornment of ears

she said was a necessary

component of my humanity

she said humans never listen

past the sounds we make

this is my way of paying homage

to a misunderstood sense

there is too much noise

too much sound disguised as important

and I think she's right this is true

most of what we ought to listen to

can be drown out in a sea 

of mechanized white refuse

she said would I like to listen to

some music while she decides

what earrings she was going to wear  

what music do you like most, she says

I say I like simple beautiful lines and

she plays Clair de Lune by Debussy and

tells me to relax and

to throw the clocks out a window

I might be here for awhile
