a first day of school is wedding season sometimes
I was waiting for the bus
getting ready
to marry myself
to possibility
I wore iron pressed
white painter’s pants,
a new rugby shirt
and black Chuck Taylor’s
I got egged
basking in the late summer
school-year-to-be
observations in the Sun
I remember, a tomboy was singing
John Cougar Mellencamp’s “Jack and Diane”
while the rest of the kids laughed
or tried to look away while I ran
home to change into some other clothes
not so new or eagerly worn
some other yesterday
that was not as nice as today
some other day that was cloudy
and waiting to be fed more of this
theft-kind of light that looked like rain
